Karinna is a third-grade student at the BCC. She and her two older sisters have attended for three years. Her mother Ms. W is a single parent whose hours at as local medical facility were decreased during the pandemic. Karinna was not performing as well academically as her sisters. After speaking with Ms. W. we learned that Karinna was experiencing problems adjusting to her father's return home after incarceration. She had become more introverted and withdrawn. Armed with this knowledge, we referred Ms. W to a local program that provided services to families who had a parent incarcerated or recently released. Karinna's teacher reviewed her quarterly grades and I Ready assessment to discover her areas of academic weakness. Academic supports were implemented that consisted of more one on one tutoring in math and reading comprehension. As a result of the interventions, her grades and family relationships improved.
