The search for self and the pursuit of acceptance are simultaneous for young people, yet for many they create dissonance. This is perhaps most true for young people who find themselves exploring, curious or confused about their gender identity or sexual orientation. Youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) often face the challenges of adolescence with the additional obstacles of discrimination, ostracism and an increased risk for physical and emotional abuse.
Project Speak Out Loud for LGBTQ youth, or Project SOL, offers a safe space for some of the city’s most at-risk and vulnerable young people.
“LGBTQ on the LES often don’t have anywhere to go to have their identities accepted and affirmed. This is a safe space for youth people to develop positively and holistically that ensures they have support,” explains Ashwini Hardikar, the assistant program director. Grand St. Settlement is proud to support this programming, which provides support services and a safe haven for LGBTQ young people and their allies.
